Whether you’re easing back into the workout game or simply living life in leggings (because honestly, is there anything else more comfortable?) postpartum leggings are guaranteed to be a staple in your postpartum wardrobe. Leggings provide the same comfort as sweatpants, but look more polished and can easily transition from workouts to errands and everything in between. When it comes to finding the right pair of postpartum leggings, there are a few factors to consider.
As someone who pretty much lived in leggings during pregnancy and still does one year postpartum, I can attest to how important it is to find a good pair of postpartum leggings. The waistband needs to hit properly, provide enough compression (but not too much), and be soft and thick enough to not provide any indiscretions (no one wants see-through leggings). When it came to finding the best postpartum leggings, I knew I had to consult with my trainer, Emily Bos, NASM and ProNatal certified, who specializes in pre and postnatal training.
When trying to figure out what were the best postpartum leggings, Emily explained that compression is the number one thing to look for in postpartum leggings. Post-birth, your body has elevated levels of progesterone which leads to swelling, especially in the abdomen and legs, which is why you want to look for leggings that offer some level of compression. “The compression provided by postpartum-specific leggings not only supports and decreases swelling, but also can provide lower back and ligament support since a new mom also still has elevated levels of the hormone relaxin (which can lead to loose feeling joints/ligaments),” she says. So finding a good pair of postpartum leggings is imperative. Let’s take a look at the best postpartum leggings, recommended by Bos and tested by a postpartum mom, me.
What to look for in postpartum leggings
Postpartum leggings are an amazing tool to help aid in the post-birth recovery process. They are designed to provide compression, support and most of all comfort, as your rapidly changing body, explains Bos. “There are many postpartum legging brands out there, and generally there’s not a “one size fits all option” in terms of specific features, fit, and feel,” she says. “It’s best to look for features that are helpful for your unique situation—like seamless materials for c-sections and high-waisted leggings for breastfeeding—and also look for soft and comfortable materials.” Given the large market of postpartum leggings, here are some factors to consider when shopping for postpartum leggings:
- Material: Opt for leggings made from soft, breathable fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or moisture-wicking materials. These fabrics provide comfort and reduce the risk of irritation, especially if you have had a C-section.
- Stretch and Recovery: Postpartum leggings should have a good amount of stretch to accommodate changes in your body size and shape. Additionally, they should have excellent recovery, meaning they return to their original shape after stretching.
- Compression Support: Some women prefer postpartum leggings with mild compression to help support the abdominal muscles and reduce swelling. However, be cautious not to choose overly tight compression, especially if you had a C-section, as it may cause discomfort.
- Waistline: If you’re breastfeeding you might want to consider leggings with a high waistband. A higher waistband will provide additional coverage so your stomach isn’t exposed during a feeding.

Lululemon High Rise Align Leggings

One Last Thing: FAQ
What’s the most comfortable fabric for a c-section?
A supportive and breathable fabric without seams is best for c-section recovery, says Bos. “First, look for leggings without seams to not irritate your c-section incision,” says Bos. Then, you’ll want leggings that are moisture-wicking. “This is important, since you may be sweating more than usual postpartum, as your body has built up extra fluid from pregnancy and birth,” explains Bos. “This, combined with your rapidly adjusting hormone levels, make the moisture-wicking feature desirable.”
How long do postpartum leggings last?
This all depends on each individual. Many postpartum leggings are not specifically for postpartum and feature quite stretchy material. It all comes down to fit and how comfortable you feel in your postpartum leggings. If they start to fall during workouts or during everyday activity, you may want to retire your postpartum leggings for another pregnancy and size down. To ensure that your leggings have a long life, Bos recommends washing your postpartum leggings in cold water and hanging them to dry to prevent degeneration of elasticity.
Can you wear your pregnancy leggings postpartum?
Yes, you can! Again, this all depends on the individual and your comfort levels. Most maternity leggings feature a high, soft and stretchy waistband that might not provide the appropriate support postpartum.
